size really does not matter

today i decided to fix a small problem on my car. i thought this would be a fairly simple task (1-2 hours). there had been an irregular squeak in the fan from the heating unit for quite a while and today was the day i was going to fix this annoyance once and for all. i was pretty excited and motivated to get this done and started around 8:30 in the morning. as i worked through all of the contraptions that european cars seem to have to get to the fan motor i was quite pleased with my progress so far (i was about one hour into the job). when i finally found the motor and the screws to remove it i came across one screw that was unusually difficult to remove. this screw was in a very odd spot and hard to get to, basically i was on my back on the floor of the passenger’s seat with my legs half way out of the car and a headlamp on my head to see this tiny little screw. i had the hardest time getting this screw undone, i really thought i might not be able to get this screw out and fix the fan motor. ironically enough it was the last screw i had to undo before the motor would come out. i was on my back for about 2 hours working on this one screw. i was extremely frustrated, to say the least, and several words that i cannot publish here came out of my mouth multiple times. so far, my 1-2 hour job is about 3 hours in, 2 of those hours working on 1 screw. finally, i get the screw out and remove the motor, clean it, put it back together and voila! everything is back together. also, the squeak is gone. that’s right, gone! i’m feeling pretty accomplished at this point even though i am about 4 1/2 hours in. i then get into the driver’s seat and go to start the car to go for a test drive. surprise, surprise, the car doesn’t start. more words not suitable for publishing come out of my mouth. i have to call a friend to come over and jump my car, the battery is dead. i drive to the nearest auto parts store and have the battery recharged and poof! like magic my car is running again with no sign of that annoying squeak. in the end, the 1-2 hour job took about 7 hours and an immense amount of frustration. when i was done i couldn’t help but think about how important it is to practice pushing through tough times and try every imaginable way to get what you want. just practicing this art of perseverance in the small areas of life can be extremely gratifying and prepare you for the tougher times that life is sure to bring by at any moment. and just as importantly as pushing through is, it is equally important to remember that you absolutely have to flexible in your approach towards your goal. don’t ever give up the goal, but try anything that will get you closer towards your goal and you are sure to reach it. so, in the end i was pretty happy with my work and it didn’t matter that it took about as long as a regular day at the office.

keeping your head out of the game

we’ve all heard the saying “just keep your head in the game”, but maybe that isn’t always the best advice. focusing on what we want is essential to getting it, but sometimes we just need a different perspective. taking your head out of the game for a few minutes every day will help you keep your focus on track. seeing the situation from a different perspective will open your eyes to new ideas and possibilities. try getting out of your chair and standing on your desk for five minutes, take a new route to work and look around at the “new” scenery, go to a spot that you used to love when you were a little kid and let your imagination start working again. see the world from a new perspective and get your head out of the game and let your mind start doing its job again. enjoy!
